Spain's revised traffic safety laws penalize drivers who fail to carry required emergency signaling equipment. As warning triangles are phased out in favor of connected V16 emergency lights, understanding traffic fines and compliance rules is vital for all motorists in Valencia and nationwide.
Fines for Missing or Improper Emergency Equipment
Under Spanish traffic regulations (Reglamento General de Vehículos), failing to carry required emergency warning devices or using non-homologated equipment carries financial penalties:
- Driving without mandatory emergency signaling equipment: Up to €80 to €200 traffic fine.
- Exiting the vehicle on motorways without a reflective safety vest: Up to €200 fine and loss of 3 driving points (for Spanish licence holders).
- Using an unapproved or non-connected yellow light after deadline: Classified as non-compliance with emergency safety standards.
Safety Best Practices When Stranded on Highways
If your vehicle breaks down on high-speed roads like the AP-7, A-7, or A-3 near Valencia:
- Pull over onto the hard shoulder or emergency breakdown bay as far right as possible.
- Turn on your hazard warning lights.
- Reach up and attach your V16 beacon to the metal roof without exiting your car.
- If you must step out of the car, put on your high-visibility reflective vest before opening the door.
- Call professional roadside recovery immediately.
