Not all tow trucks are built the same. Depending on your vehicle type, gearbox (manual vs automatic), location, and condition, choosing the correct tow truck is essential to prevent damage during recovery.
1. Hydraulic Flatbed Tow Trucks (Grúa de Plataforma)
The most common and safest towing truck in Spain. The entire bed tilts hydraulically down to ground level, allowing vehicles to drive or be winched onto the platform.
- Best for: All passenger cars, 4x4s, electric vehicles (EVs), automatics, lowered vehicles, and motorbikes.
- Safety: Eliminates drivetrain wear since all four wheels rest off the ground.
2. Wheel-Lift & Under-Lift Tow Trucks (Grúa de Arrastre / Cuchara)
Uses a hydraulic metal yoke that fits under the front or rear tyres, lifting two wheels while the remaining two roll on the road (or on dolly wheels).
- Best for: Tight urban streets, underground parking garages with low clearance ceilings (under 2 meters).
3. Crane Tow Trucks (Grúa Pluma)
Equipped with a hydraulic crane arm capable of lifting vehicles vertically out of ditches, steep embankments, or tight parking spots where flatbeds cannot align.
4. Heavy Commercial Recovery Trucks (Grúa Pesada)
Heavy-duty multi-axle recovery vehicles designed specifically for buses, articulated lorries, and commercial trucks with high towing capacity.
